In collaboration with Feminist Internet and Camberwell College of Arts Creative Computing Institute (CCI).
The term “Memestrilism” is derived from the words “meme” and “minstrelsy”, and is used to identify forms of minstrel-esk behaviours, trends and creations within the digital and online realm.
The film is critical exploration on a new age form of minstrelsy, paralleling the online landscape pertaining to black imagery and drawing comparisons to historical uses of racist imagery in the media.
Memestrilism has been created in collaboration, between myself and Feminist Internet co-founder Andrew Mallison. The final result is a culmination of 7 months of research, routine discussion, content collation, audio and video editing.
In the summer of 2022 Feminist Internet and CCI premiered Memestrilism online via YouTube, publishing a pre-recorded discussion between myself, Andrew, Arda Awais and Savena Surana from Identity 2.0.
