My Featured Work
This intricately constructed three-piece crochet work is made with a combination of acrylic Aran yarn, an Alpaca acrylic blend Aran yarn, Ombré embroidery thread and beads. The work responds to the navigation of uncertainty and persistent anxiety and is adjacent to broader themes of belonging, labour, value and consumerism.
Whilst exploring personal experiences the work also aims to challenge perceptions of textile work, exemplifying the time and labour that goes into textile processes, that oftentimes are dismissed and devalued due to the ease in which we can obtain textile garments and accessories.
The three pieces follow my body proportions, hugging some parts tightly and other areas loosely. Areas of the body are erased through the absence of yarn, but there are areas where bits of yarn may drape or hang down, indictive that those parts of the body may to become covered soon.
The nature of crochet as a process provides the option for the addition of more yarn or the removal of it through unravelling or cutting away of it. Crochet acts as a mode of representation for the fluctuation of uncertainty and anxiety, their potential to grow and their potential to decreased.
Additionally, the repetition of crochet lends itself to being a therapeutic process. It was almost as if I was able to temporarily crochet away the uncertainty and anxiety.
